Notes: Alan Stevenson (1807-1865) was from the famous Stevenson family of Scottish engineers. He succeeded his father as engineer to the Northern Lighthouse Board and built 13 lighthouses around Scotland. Skerryvore, constructed on a remote reef 12 miles south west of Tiree 1838-44, was one of his greatest achievements. There were many construction difficulties. Skerryvore is the tallest lighthouse in the UK. An extremely detailed account of the building of the lighthouse with fine plates, maps etc.
