Notes: A superb 1920s artist's book, describing the modern city, with themes of industrialism and workers' power. Otto Schatz (1900-1961) was an Austrian painter and woodcut artist, active in both Berlin and Vienna in the 1920s. Like Grosz, Dix, Masreel etc his work evolved from expressionism towards the "neue Sachlichkeit" movement. Schatz was banned by the Nazis and went to New York in the late 1930s. He returned to Germany in 1938 and was interned for some time in a concentration camp. After the War, Schatz returned to Vienna and died there. A lovely item, quite in tune with the modern city's dynamism.
